Knee Joint01:23

Knee Joint

The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee.
A total of seven ligaments support the knee joint. The patellar ligament, which is also attached to the quadriceps femoris group...

Summary

Curved intertrochanteric varus osteotomy preserves the hip joint in patients with femoral head osteonecrosis. This procedure protects against disease progression, maintaining joint health long-term.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hip Preservation Surgery

Background:

  • Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) can lead to hip joint destruction.
  • Surgical interventions aim to preserve the native hip joint and prevent advanced disease.

Observation:

  • A curved intertrochanteric varus osteotomy involves a specific bone cut between the lesser and greater trochanters.
  • This osteotomy repositions the femoral head into a varus alignment in the coronal plane.

Findings:

  • In a study of 57 joints with a mean follow-up of 5.4 years, 98% of hips were preserved.
  • 90% of treated joints showed protection against further disease progression.

Implications:

  • Curved intertrochanteric varus osteotomy demonstrates significant potential for hip joint preservation in ONFH.
