Survey Safety01:28

Survey Safety

Surveying near highways, rough terrain, or power lines involves significant risks. Working along highways is particularly dangerous and requires the use of warning signs and flagmen. It is safest to avoid working directly on roads and use offsets whenever possible. When highway work is unavoidable, it must follow all safety guidelines. Surveyors should wear bright clothing, such as orange reflective vests, to ensure visibility to motorists, coworkers, and hunters. In construction zones, wearing...
Relationship with Other Adult Family Members and Siblings01:29

Relationship with Other Adult Family Members and Siblings

Other adult family members and siblings play a crucial role in shaping children’s social and emotional development. While parents or primary caregivers are often the central figures in early attachment and socialization, other adults in a child’s life, such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles, can significantly influence developmental outcomes. These influences depend on each adult’s personality and may help compensate when a primary caregiver is emotionally distant or inconsistent. For...
Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity01:23

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.
Parental Influence on Identity Development
Parents serve as primary guides and managers in an adolescent's life, offering support instrumental in decision-making and personal growth. This guiding role...
Types of Toxins01:36

Types of Toxins

Humans continually engage with an environment rich in potentially harmful chemicals. These are introduced to our bodies through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. These chemicals exist in various forms, such as air and environmental pollutants, agricultural chemicals, organic solvents, and heavy metals.
Air pollutants, primarily gases, pose significant threats to respiratory health, leading to conditions like hypoxia, lung cancer, and in extreme cases, death.
Environmental pollutants like...

Social Foundations of Self I: Play and Game

The development of self in children is deeply rooted in social interactions, mainly through stages of play and structured games. These stages, outlined by sociologist George Herbert Mead, illustrate how children progressively learn to understand and adopt social roles, forming a cohesive sense of self. The Play Stage: Imitation and Simple Role-TakingIn the early years of childhood, the play stage is characterized by imitative behavior, where children engage in role-playing based on familiar...
Ethical Standards I01:25

Ethical Standards I

The American Nurses Association (ANA) created and implemented the first nationally accepted Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements. The Code of Ethics is a living document regularly updated by the ANA and establishes an ethical standard that is non-negotiable for nurses in all roles and settings.
The Code of Ethics provisions outline the nurse's duty to the patient, the healthcare team, the profession, and society. The Code's fundamental principles include advocacy,...

Summary

Many young athletes lack awareness of orofacial injuries and protective gear. While aware of mouthguards, South Indian school children showed no usage, highlighting a critical gap in sports safety knowledge.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Pediatric Health
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Sports participation is a common cause of injuries in children and adolescents.
  • Orofacial injuries represent a significant risk in athletic activities.
  • Understanding awareness levels is crucial for implementing effective prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the awareness of orofacial injuries and emergency care among South Indian school children.
  • To evaluate the knowledge and usage of protective devices, specifically mouthguards, in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted with 719 athletically active school children aged 11-14 years.
  • Data was collected using a structured questionnaire across four urban South Indian cities.

  • Statistical analysis was performed to determine awareness and usage patterns.
  • Main Results:

    • A significant inadequacy in awareness regarding orofacial injuries and their emergency management was observed.
    • Knowledge about protective devices was minimal among the participants.
    • While most children knew about mouthguards, none reported using them.

    Conclusions:

    • There is a critical need to improve orofacial injury awareness and promote the use of protective equipment in young athletes.
    • Educational interventions focusing on sports safety and mouthguard utilization are recommended for South Indian school children.
    • Addressing this knowledge-practice gap is essential for reducing sports-related orofacial injuries.
