Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the protective immunity conferred by a multicomponent kitten vaccine at 4 weeks and 1 year post-vaccination.
  • To determine the influence of MDA on the serological response to vaccination in kittens.

Main Methods:

  • Experimental challenge study using specific pathogen-free kittens vaccinated with a non-adjuvanted multicomponent vaccine.
  • Kittens were challenged with feline parvovirus, feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus, and Chlamydophila felis at different time points.
  • Serum antibody titres were measured to assess the impact of MDA on vaccination responses.

Main Results:

  • Complete protection against feline parvovirus was observed at both 4 weeks and 1 year post-vaccination.
  • Protection against feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus, and Chlamydophila felis diminished by 1 year post-vaccination.
  • Maternally derived antibodies showed heterogeneity and could neutralize serological responses, particularly in younger kittens.

Conclusions:

  • A decline in protective immunity suggests that the first booster vaccine may need earlier administration (4-6 months of age).
  • Maternally derived antibodies can interfere with kitten vaccination responses, supporting later primary vaccination series completion (16 weeks of age).
