Background:

  • Neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is a serious condition.
  • Intrauterine acquisition poses diagnostic challenges due to atypical presentations.

Observation:

  • Two neonates presented with atypical skin lesions at or shortly after birth.
  • The unusual timing and appearance of lesions initially obscured the diagnosis of herpes virus infection.

Findings:

  • Herpes simplex virus type I was diagnosed in both infants.
  • Both infants received prompt treatment with the antiviral medication acyclovir.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis of neonatal herpes is critical.
  • Timely administration of acyclovir significantly improves outcomes for infants with neonatal herpes infections.
