Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between folate status, homocysteine levels, and subjective mood in healthy adult males.
  • To determine if red-blood-cell (RBC) folate, serum folate, or plasma homocysteine concentrations correlate with mood states.

Main Methods:

  • Healthy males (n=58, aged 19-47) provided blood samples for folate and homocysteine analysis.
  • Subjective mood was assessed twice daily for one week using the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS).
  • Red-blood-cell (RBC) folate, serum folate, and plasma homocysteine concentrations were measured.

Main Results:

  • Elevated RBC folate concentrations were significantly associated with reduced variability in negative mood states (P=0.023).
  • No significant relationships were found between subjective mood and serum folate or plasma homocysteine levels.
  • The Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) was used to quantify mood states.

Conclusions:

  • This study is the first to report a link between long-term folate status and subjective mood stability in healthy males.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the complex relationship between nutritional status and mood.
  • Folate status may play a role in mood regulation, particularly in mitigating negative mood fluctuations.
