Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) increased bone mineral density during limb lengthening in rabbits. However, HBOT did not significantly improve biomechanical bone strength in this distraction osteogenesis model.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedics
- Regenerative Medicine
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical technique used to lengthen bone.
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is known to promote tissue healing.
- The role of HBOT in enhancing distraction osteogenesis requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of HBOT on bone healing during distraction osteogenesis.
- To evaluate the impact of HBOT on bone mineral density and biomechanical properties.
Main Methods:
- A rabbit limb-lengthening model was utilized.
- Animals received daily HBOT at 2.5 atmospheres absolute during the latent period.
- Bone mineral density was assessed via torsional testing.
- Biomechanical testing was performed 8 weeks postoperatively.
Main Results:
- A statistically significant increase in bone mineral density was observed in the HBOT group.
- No significant differences in biomechanical parameters were found between the HBOT and control groups.
- The study highlights a potential benefit of HBOT on bone mineralization.
Conclusions:
- HBOT may positively influence bone mineral density during distraction osteogenesis.
- Further histological studies are needed to elucidate the precise mechanisms of HBOT's effects on collagen synthesis and bone formation.
- The clinical implications of these findings warrant additional research.
