Background:

The oncology nursing workforce is aging, with many nurses facing increased cancer risk.
A growing number of oncology nurses are cancer survivors, leading to unique challenges when colleagues treat them.
Few publications address the experiences of oncology nurses undergoing cancer treatment at their workplace.

Purpose of the Study:

To capture the experience of an oncology nurse treated for breast cancer at her place of employment.
To explore the impact of a nurse's cancer survivorship journey on patient care and colleagues.

Main Methods:

Qualitative narrative of one oncology nurse's personal experience with breast cancer and chemotherapy.
Inclusion of colleagues' perspectives on witnessing the survivorship process.
Case study from Pennsylvania Oncology Hematology Associates (POHA).

Main Results:

The nurse gained a new level of understanding and empathy with patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Colleagues reported being inspired and humbled by the nurse's journey.
The experience positively transformed a difficult situation, enhancing patient care.

Conclusions:

An oncology nurse undergoing cancer treatment at her workplace can lead to enhanced patient care and empathy.
