Depressants01:28

Depressants

Depressant drugs, including alcohol and sedative-hypnotics, diminish central nervous system activity by enhancing the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity and promotes relaxation. These substances can have various therapeutic uses but also pose significant risks, especially when misused or combined.
Alcohol is a common depressant that can induce a sense of relaxation and reduced inhibition at low doses. Contrary to its occasional...
Microbes in Beverage Production01:25

Microbes in Beverage Production

Alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, and spirits are the products of microbial fermentation processes that transform simple sugars into ethanol and a wide array of complex flavor compounds. These transformations rely on the metabolic activities of specific yeasts and bacteria, which are selected and controlled to yield the desired beverage characteristics.Wine Fermentation and MaturationWine production begins with the crushing of grapes to release juice and pulp, forming a must that is...
Cognitive Dissonance01:38

Cognitive Dissonance

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine

Ethanol, a clear colorless alcohol, has been consumed by humans for millennia, but its effects on the body are far from benign. At lower doses, it induces decreased inhibitions and loquaciousness, leading to its social appeal. However, it can cause severe consequences at higher doses, such as coma and respiratory depression, due to its zero-order elimination kinetics. Chronic ethanol abuse wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems, particularly the CNS and the liver. Abrupt cessation of ethanol...
Protection of Alcohols02:31

Protection of Alcohols

This lesson delves into the concept of protection and deprotection of a functional group fundamental to synthetic organic chemistry. These phenomena are explained in the context of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols.
Protection
It defines a protecting group as the masking agent to make the more reactive species inert to a given set of conditions. This concept is depicted via the illustration of liquid flow through different outlets in an assembly of pipes. The analogy helps to understand the role...
Production of Alcohol01:27

Production of Alcohol

Continuous fermentation is a key strategy in industrial ethanol production, particularly when efficiency, scalability, and high yields are essential. This approach allows for uninterrupted operation and optimized resource utilization. The primary feedstock, corn starch, undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis facilitated by α-amylase and glucoamylase. These enzymes break down the starch into fermentable sugars such as glucose, which are readily assimilated by fermentative microorganisms.Fermentation...

Summary

Pregaming, drinking alcohol before events, uniquely predicts intoxication in college students. Drinking games did not predict intoxication, suggesting these are distinct behaviors needing separate prevention strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Substance Abuse Research

Background:

  • Pregregaming is less studied than drinking games among college students.
  • Alcohol violations often lead to mandated student participation in research.
  • Understanding college drinking behaviors is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of pregaming and drinking games in college students referred for alcohol violations.
  • To examine the relationship between pregaming, drinking games, and alcohol-related outcomes.
  • To differentiate pregaming and drinking games as distinct behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • Survey administered to 334 college students mandated for alcohol violations.
  • Assessed prevalence of pregaming and drinking games on the night of referral.
  • Analyzed associations with estimated blood alcohol content, drinking history, and event perception.

Main Results:

  • 31% reported pregaming; 49% reported playing drinking games.
  • Pregaming associated with higher estimated blood alcohol content and greater responsibility.
  • Neither behavior consistently linked to recent alcohol consumption or problems; they rarely co-occurred.
  • Pregaming uniquely predicted intoxication, while drinking games did not.

Conclusions:

  • Pregaming and drinking games are distinct activities with different implications.
  • Pregaming is a significant predictor of intoxication among college students.
  • Targeted prevention strategies are needed for both pregaming and drinking games.
