This case study shows a patient with high-grade gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) achieving remission two years post-surgery and Imatinib mesylate treatment. This highlights the effectiveness of combined therapy for advanced GIST.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare neoplasms.
  • Surgical resection was the primary treatment for GISTs.
  • Advanced GISTs now benefit from multimodal therapy including targeted agents.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with a high-grade GIST.
  • Multiple intraperitoneal tumors were identified via laparotomy.
  • Tumor burden included large masses up to 22cm and widespread peritoneal dissemination.

Findings:

  • Cytoreductive surgery was performed, excising larger masses.
  • Residual tumor implants were treated with Imatinib mesylate.
  • The patient achieved remission and remained disease-free for two years post-treatment.

Implications:

  • Imatinib mesylate demonstrates significant efficacy in managing advanced GIST.
  • Combined surgical and pharmacological approaches improve patient outcomes.
  • This case supports Imatinib mesylate as a crucial component in GIST treatment protocols.
