Area of Science:

  • Child Psychology
  • Behavioral Therapy
  • Anxiety Disorders

Background:

  • Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) often manifests with nighttime disturbances, impacting children's well-being.
  • Cognitive-behavioral procedures are established therapeutic approaches for anxiety disorders.

Observation:

  • This study investigated the efficacy of self-control training and contingent reinforcement for nighttime problems in two girls with SAD.
  • A multiple baseline design across subjects was employed to assess the additive effects of treatment components.

Findings:

  • Self-control training alone did not significantly reduce anxiety or bed avoidance behaviors.
  • The addition of contingent reinforcement to self-control training led to significant reductions in nighttime anxiety and avoidance.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Observed improvements generalized to other symptoms associated with separation anxiety disorder.
  • Implications:

    • Contingent reinforcement is a crucial component when using self-control training for childhood separation anxiety disorder.
    • These findings support the integration of behavioral reinforcement strategies in cognitive-behavioral interventions for pediatric anxiety.
    • The study highlights the potential for generalized treatment effects in addressing complex anxiety presentations.
