Brain Imaging

Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Summary

Readers spontaneously segment stories into events, a process linked to brain activity changes. This brain response to narrative shifts aids understanding and memory during reading.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Psychology of Reading

Background:

  • Readers naturally organize narrative text into events for comprehension and recall.
  • Understanding the neural basis of narrative segmentation is crucial for reading research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying the segmentation of narrative text into events.
  • To determine if event segmentation is a spontaneous reading process.

Main Methods:

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to record brain activity in subjects reading narrative texts.
  • Participants later identified boundaries between large and small events within the narratives.

Main Results:

  • Transient increases in brain activity were observed at identified event boundaries during initial reading.

  • Neural activity changes correlated with alterations in the narrated situation, such as shifts in character goals.
  • Conclusions:

    • Event segmentation is an automatic cognitive process during reading.
    • Neural responses to situational changes within a narrative are critical for event segmentation.
