Summary

Monetary feedback improved Wisconsin Card Sorting Test performance in male schizophrenic patients by reducing errors and increasing correct responses. This suggests motivation influences cognitive deficits in schizophrenia.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Cognitive Psychology

Background:

  • Schizophrenia is associated with cognitive deficits, particularly in executive functions.
  • The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is a common tool for assessing executive functions.
  • Perseverative errors on the WCST are a hallmark of cognitive impairment in schizophrenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of monetary feedback on the WCST performance of male schizophrenic patients.
  • To determine if motivational factors, modulated by monetary reinforcement, can influence cognitive task performance in schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 14 male patients diagnosed with schizophrenia participated.
  • The WCST was administered under two conditions: standard instructions and with monetary feedback.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The order of conditions was counterbalanced across participants.
  • Main Results:

    • Monetary reinforcement significantly reduced perseverative errors (p < .05).
    • Monetary reinforcement led to a significant increase in correct responses (p < .05).

    Conclusions:

    • Monetary feedback can ameliorate specific cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, as measured by the WCST.
    • Perseverative errors in schizophrenic patients on the WCST appear to be influenced by both cognitive and motivational factors.
