Summary

Three cases of endometrial carcinoma (EmCa) showed no residual cancer after hysterectomy. DNA profiling confirmed specimen identity, suggesting a "vanishing EmCa" phenomenon warrants clinical recognition.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Endometrial carcinoma (EmCa) diagnosis is typically based on biopsy findings.
  • Hysterectomy specimens are examined for residual disease after initial EmCa diagnosis.

Observation:

  • Three cases of histologically confirmed EmCa showed no residual tumor on hysterectomy specimens.
  • DNA profiling excluded specimen misidentification, confirming the shared identity of biopsy and hysterectomy samples.

Findings:

  • The phenomenon of "vanishing EmCa" is proposed, analogous to vanishing prostate cancer.
  • Specific pathological and clinical criteria are suggested for defining vanishing EmCa.
  • DNA profiling can be utilized to confirm vanishing EmCa diagnoses.

Implications:

  • Vanishing EmCa represents a small subset of hysterectomy cases initially diagnosed with EmCa.
  • Recognizing vanishing EmCa may have clinical utility in patient management.
  • The concept may also be relevant in medicolegal contexts.
