Abstract:
Our concern for machines and for their abilities, though quite ancient, has increased with the outstanding achievements of modern computers. What, then, is typical of a machine? Is its output really limited by our input? For questions like these, an appropriate tool is the concept of algorithm. Algorithms are best characterized as mental tools ("Denkzeuge").
