Brain Abscess l: Introduction01:26

Brain Abscess l: Introduction

A brain abscess is a focal, intracerebral infection characterized by a localized collection of pus within the brain parenchyma, resulting from microbial invasion and the body’s inflammatory response. It progresses through stages: early and late cerebritis, followed by early and late capsule formation, reflecting tissue destruction, immune response, and eventual encapsulation.Etiology and PathogenesisCausative organisms vary with source and host factors, often involving polymicrobial infections,...

Acute Pancreatitis II: Clinical Manifestations and Management

Acute pancreatitis presents a complex medical emergency characterized by rapid onset inflammation of the pancreas, demanding timely diagnosis and management to prevent complications. The condition primarily manifests through severe upper abdominal pain that often radiates to the back. This pain intensifies following the consumption of fatty foods. Accompanying symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, fever, dyspnea, cyanosis, and jaundice can vary in intensity but significantly...

Acute Pyelonephritis II: Diagnostic Studies and Management

Introduction:For diagnosing acute pyelonephritis, a comprehensive patient history is collected to identify symptoms such as dysuria, frequent or urgent urination, flank pain, or costovertebral angle (CVA) tenderness that may suggest a kidney infection.Physical ExaminationDuring the physical examination, CVA tenderness is assessed. This involves gentle percussion over the costovertebral angle, where tenderness often indicates a kidney infection.Diagnostic TestsUrinalysis: Used to identify white...

Appendicitis-II: Diagnostic Studies and Management

Diagnosing and managing appendicitis requires a structured and comprehensive approach that spans from initial assessment to postoperative care. Here is an overview of the process:
Diagnosing Appendicitis
It requires a multifaceted approach, starting with a detailed physical examination to pinpoint the location and nature of the pain and identify any associated symptoms. Laboratory tests play a crucial role. A complete Blood Count (CBC) typically reveals leukocytosis (an increased number of...

Esophageal Perforation-II: Clinical Manifestations and Management

Esophageal perforations manifest in various clinical forms, influenced by factors such as the perforation's cause and location (cervical, intrathoracic, or intra-abdominal), the extent of contamination, and potential injury to adjacent mediastinal structures. The timing between the perforation occurrence and treatment initiation also affects the clinical presentation.

Pleural Effusion II: Symptoms and Management

Pleural Effusion Overview
A pleural effusion is the abnormal collection of fluid between the parietal and visceral pleura layers of tissue that form the lining of the lungs and chest cavity. It can occur independently or due to surrounding parenchymal diseases, such as infection, malignancy, or inflammatory conditions.

Summary

Diagnosing splenic abscess can be challenging, often presenting with diffuse abdominal pain and fever. Ultrasound proved more reliable than computed tomographic (CT) scans in identifying these rare infections.

Area of Science:

  • Medicine
  • Radiology
  • Surgery

Background:

  • Splenic abscess is a rare clinical condition.
  • Diagnosis can be delayed due to non-specific symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report on the diagnosis and management of splenic abscess cases.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of diagnostic imaging modalities.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of six patients with splenic abscess.
  • Analysis of clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging (ultrasound and CT), and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Common symptoms included diffuse abdominal pain and fever; localized signs were infrequent.
  • Ultrasound was reliable in five patients; computed tomographic (CT) scans were accurate in three.
  • Splenectomy was performed in some cases, while CT-guided aspiration is emerging as an alternative.

Conclusions:

  • Splenic abscess diagnosis requires high clinical suspicion.
  • Ultrasound is a valuable tool for diagnosing splenic abscess.
  • Treatment strategies vary, with splenectomy as a traditional choice and CT-guided aspiration for specific cases.
