Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring01:23

Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring

Holter monitoring is a continuous electrocardiography (ECG) recording that tracks the heart's electrical activity over an extended period, generally 24 to 48 hours. This noninvasive diagnostic tool detects irregular heart rhythms that may not be captured during a standard ECG performed in a clinical setting.DeviceThe Holter monitor is a portable, small device connected to several electrodes on the patient's chest. These electrodes detect the heart's electrical signals and transmit them to the...
Pulse rhythm01:30

Pulse rhythm

Pulse rhythm refers to the pattern of pulsations within specific intervals, offering valuable insights into the regularity or irregularity of the heart's beats as observed through the pattern of pulsation within specific intervals. A regular pulse exhibits a consistent heart rate with uniform waveforms and pulsation force, variations of which can be classified as normal, weak, or bounding.
Conversely, an irregular pulse pattern is termed dysrhythmia, stemming from disruptions in cardiac muscle...

Equipments Used To Measure Blood Pressure

Direct Method
This invasive approach involves cannulating a peripheral artery. During each cardiac contraction, pressure generates mechanical motion within the catheter, transmitted through rigid, fluid-filled tubing to a transducer. This transducer converts mechanical motion into electrical signals displayed as waveforms on a monitor. An automatic flushing system prevents blood backflow. Due to the potential risk of unexpected arterial blood loss, this method is primarily used in intensive...

Special considerations while measuring pulse

Assessing a patient's pulse is a fundamental skill in healthcare, but certain situations require special attention:
Measurement of Blood Pressure01:17

Measurement of Blood Pressure

Assessing blood pressure is a standard procedure executed in virtually all medical environments. The method utilized today was established over a hundred years ago by an innovative Russian doctor, Dr. Nikolai Korotkoff. The soft ticking noise, known as Korotkoff sounds, heard while taking blood pressure readings results from turbulent blood flow within the vessels. The apparatus required for this procedure includes a sphygmomanometer, a blood pressure cuff attached to a gauge, and a stethoscope.

Summary

Activity monitors quantify physical activity (PA) but differ between brands. Applying a conversion equation makes data from Actigraph and Actical monitors comparable, especially with log-transformed data.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical engineering
  • Exercise science
  • Public health

Background:

  • Physical activity (PA) research is crucial for understanding disease relationships.
  • Activity monitors quantify free-living PA over extended periods.
  • Limited knowledge exists on inter-brand comparability and data conversion for activity monitors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare physical activity (PA) data from two different activity monitor brands.
  • To assess the feasibility of converting data between activity monitor brands.

Main Methods:

  • 56 participants wore Actigraph (AGR) and Actical (MM) monitors for 15 days.
  • Activity monitors were worn on an elasticized belt over the hip.
  • Data comparability was analyzed using t-tests, Pearson correlations, Bland-Altman plots, and coefficients of variation (CV).

Main Results:

  • The AGR detected significantly more daily PA than the MM (P < 0.0001).
  • Raw data showed higher inter-monitor variability (CV 15.5%) than log-transformed data (CV 3.1%).
  • Applying a conversion equation significantly reduced variability for both raw (CV 11.7%) and log-transformed data (CV 2.2%).

Conclusions:

  • Direct comparison of physical activity (PA) data between Actigraph and Actical monitors is not recommended.
  • Data from different activity monitor brands can be made comparable using a conversion equation.
  • Log-transformed data conversion provides more accurate and comparable results between activity monitor brands.
