The urinary bladder is a hollow, muscular sac that temporarily stores urine before it is expelled from the body. It can hold approximately 600 mL of urine prior to micturition. The bladder is retroperitoneal and located behind the pubic symphysis in the pelvic floor.
In males, the bladder is situated in front of the rectum, while in females, it is positioned anterior to the vagina and uterus. The bladder floor contains an inverted triangular area called the trigone, defined by the two ureteric...

Summary

Invasive bladder cancer requires cystectomy or radical cystoprostatectomy. Early detection and monitoring improve survival rates, with ileal neobladder reconstruction offering a preferred urinary diversion option.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology

Context:

  • Invasive bladder tumors infiltrate the bladder's muscular wall.
  • Diagnosis involves clinical exams and abdominopelvic CT scans.

Purpose:

  • To outline the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for invasive bladder cancer.

Summary:

  • Radical cystectomy (men) or cystoprostatectomy (women) is standard for invasive bladder cancer.
  • Adjuvant chemotherapy is considered for extravesical or lymphatic spread.
  • Ileal neobladder reconstruction is preferred for urinary diversion post-surgery.
  • Regular monitoring is crucial for detecting recurrence.

Impact:

  • High survival rates (90% 5-year) are achievable with timely treatment.
