Background:

Asperger's disorder (AD) is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by social and communication deficits, and restricted interests.
AD typically emerges in childhood, but diagnosis is often delayed into adulthood.

Observation:

A 21-year-old male diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder presented with atypical features requiring further diagnostic evaluation.
Psychopathological examination revealed childhood-onset social, psychomotor, and communication impairments.

Findings:

Biomedical and psychological testing supported a dual diagnosis of Asperger's disorder and schizoaffective disorder.
Symptom overlap between AD and other psychiatric conditions can complicate diagnosis.

Implications:

Delayed or incorrect diagnosis of Asperger's disorder is possible due to overlapping symptoms with other psychiatric disorders.
Recognizing dual diagnoses is essential for effective treatment planning and patient outcomes.
