Community matrons: the value of knowing self (part two)
Abstract:
This article, one of a series, is based on a programme of Department of Health-funded masterclasses held in the summer of 2006 and aimed at community matrons. In examining an essential component of person-centred care--practitioners' self-awareness--the author considers the concept of the 'courageous conversation'. This is dialogue with a patient, family member, colleague or other stakeholder where difficult subjects must be broached, bad news shared or complex relationships addressed. Courageous conversations are a central feature of the community matron's role and require insight and self-knowledge. Acknowledging their importance and using the skills associated with them to tackle unresolved problems can lead ultimately to better outcomes for patients.
