Summary

Postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis is linked to intra-articular pain pumps using bupivacaine and epinephrine. These pain pumps should be avoided to prevent this condition.

Background:

  • Postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis is a recently identified complication.
  • The exact cause of this condition remains unknown.

Observation:

  • A case series reviewed 10 patients (12 shoulders) diagnosed with postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis.
  • These cases were compared to 177 other shoulder arthroscopies performed during the same period.

Findings:

  • Four common factors were identified in the affected shoulders.
  • A significant association was found between chondrolysis and the use of high-flow intra-articular pain pump catheters containing bupivacaine and epinephrine.

Implications:

  • The use of intra-articular pain pumps with bupivacaine and epinephrine appears to be a major risk factor for postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis.
