Adhesion occurs when one type of molecule is attracted to a different molecule. Water exhibits adhesive properties in the presence of polar surfaces, such as glass or cellulose in plants. For instance, when water is poured into a glass, the positively charged hydrogen molecules of water are more attracted to the negatively charged oxygen molecules in the silica than to the oxygen in neighboring water molecules.

Adherens Junctions

Strong contact points between adjacent cells anchor them to each other, forming tissues. Such anchoring junctions are of two types –  adherens junctions and desmosomes. Adherens junctions are abundant in tissues such as  epithelium and endothelium, forming a continuous zone of adhesion called the adhesion belt. In other tissues, such as  heart muscle, they appear as clusters, linking the cells to produce coordinated heart muscle contraction.

Summary

Postpartum labial adhesions are rare but can impact sexual activity. Surgical division under local anesthesia offers a rapid and effective treatment for these adhesions.

Background:

  • Labial adhesions are common in pre-pubertal girls and post-menopausal women.
  • Topical estrogen is the standard first-line treatment for labial adhesions.
  • Postpartum labial adhesions are infrequently encountered in clinical practice.

Observation:

  • A case of a 29-year-old woman presenting with a 5-mm labial adhesion 6 weeks postpartum following vacuum-assisted delivery.
  • The adhesion connected the left and right labia minora.
  • The patient experienced no pain but reported an impact on sexual activity.

Findings:

  • Surgical division of the postpartum labial adhesion was performed under local anesthesia.
  • Complete recovery was achieved within 3 days of the procedure.
