Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of betel leaves as a stoma care alternative in pediatric patients.
  • To compare the outcomes of betel leaf stoma care with conventional ostomy bags.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 623 pediatric patients with exteriorized bowel from June 1998 to December 2005.
  • 495 patients received betel leaf stoma care, while 128 used ostomy bags.
  • Zinc oxide paste was applied, followed by betel leaves adapted to stoma size; leaves were changed every 2-3 days.

  • Betel leaf stoma care resulted in a significantly lower incidence of skin excoriation (2.6%) compared to ostomy bags (40.65%).

Conclusions:
