Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Epidemiology
  • Food Safety

Context:

  • Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) surveillance in the Netherlands.
  • Review of clinical symptoms and epidemiological data up to 2006.
  • Analysis of passive surveillance system sensitivity.

Purpose:

  • To review the current situation of BSE in the Netherlands.
  • To discuss the epidemiology and risk factors of BSE.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of surveillance and policy measures.

Summary:

  • 82 cases of BSE were reported in cattle born in the Netherlands by 2006.
  • Cross-contamination of feed with meat-and-bone meal was identified as the primary cause.
  • A decline in BSE cases is anticipated due to implemented control measures.
  • Passive surveillance systems demonstrate low sensitivity in detecting BSE cases.

Impact:

  • The findings inform future BSE policy and management strategies.
  • Recommendations for adapting European BSE policy based on declining case numbers.
  • Emphasis on continued public health protection and disease eradication efforts.
