Summary

This case study highlights a rare instance of osteosarcoma soft tissue metastasis. A young man achieved long-term remission after surgical removal of skeletal muscle metastasis without chemotherapy.

Background:

  • Osteosarcoma commonly metastasizes to lungs and bone.
  • Soft tissue metastasis from osteosarcoma is exceptionally rare.
  • Long-term survival following soft tissue metastasis is infrequently reported.

Observation:

  • An 18-year-old male presented with a solitary skeletal muscle metastasis.
  • This occurred as the second relapse of osteosarcoma.
  • The metastasis was located in the right vastus lateralis muscle.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent complete surgical excision of the metastasis.
  • No adjuvant chemotherapy was administered post-surgery.
  • The patient has remained disease-free for over 34 months.

Implications:

  • This case suggests that surgical resection can be a viable option for localized soft tissue metastasis in osteosarcoma.
  • It challenges the conventional treatment paradigms for rare metastatic patterns.
  • Further research into surgical management of soft tissue osteosarcoma metastasis is warranted.
