Background:

  • Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a severe systemic disease with a 5% mortality rate.
  • NSF exclusively affects patients with severely impaired renal function (GFR <30 ml/min per 1.73 m²).
  • An association between NSF and the administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) has been established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the postulated pathogenesis of NSF.
  • To provide an overview of regulatory and advisory statements regarding GBCAs and NSF.
  • To inform clinical practice regarding the use of GBCAs in patients with renal impairment.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on NSF and GBCAs.
  • Analysis of retrospective case-control studies on GBCAs and NSF risk.
  • Compilation of statements and recommendations from international regulatory authorities and advisory boards.
