Summary

Fluoride application significantly reduces enamel and dentin demineralization caused by tooth bleaching. This finding suggests fluoride as a potential treatment for tooth sensitivity following bleaching procedures.

Background:

  • Tooth bleaching is a common cosmetic procedure.
  • Bleaching agents can cause demineralization of enamel and dentin.
  • This demineralization may lead to tooth sensitivity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the protective effects of fluoride on tooth structure during bleaching.
  • To evaluate morphological changes in enamel and dentin after bleaching with and without fluoride treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve patients undergoing orthodontic extraction of first premolars participated.
  • Teeth were divided into three groups: bleaching with sodium fluoride (NaF) treatment, bleaching only, and control.
  • Extracted teeth were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for morphological analysis.

Main Results:

  • Bleaching alone caused mild enamel demineralization and dentin collagen scaffold collapse.
  • Dentinal tubule diameter became non-uniform due to peritubular demineralization in the bleaching-only group.
  • NaF-treated group showed reduced enamel and dentin demineralization, with some dentinal tubules exhibiting smaller diameters.

Conclusions:

  • Fluoride effectively mitigates enamel and dentin demineralization during tooth bleaching.
  • Fluoride may serve as a valuable therapeutic agent to manage bleaching-induced tooth sensitivity.
