Summary

Genuine premature ejaculation is linked to lower seminal plasma magnesium levels. This study found significantly reduced seminal magnesium in men with premature ejaculation compared to controls.

Background:

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common male sexual dysfunction.
The role of magnesium in male reproductive health is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between genuine premature ejaculation and magnesium levels in serum and seminal plasma.

Main Methods:

A case-control study compared 19 patients with genuine premature ejaculation to 19 controls.
Serum and seminal plasma magnesium levels were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
Patients with organic or psychogenic causes of PE were excluded.

Main Results:

Seminal plasma magnesium was significantly lower in patients with PE (94.73 mg/L) versus controls (116.68 mg/L).
No significant difference was observed in serum magnesium levels between the groups.
The semen-to-serum magnesium ratio was significantly lower in patients with PE.

Conclusions:

Genuine premature ejaculation is associated with decreased seminal plasma magnesium concentrations.
Further research is warranted to elucidate magnesium's role in male reproductive physiology and PE.
