Ovarian Cycle

The menstrual cycle includes a critical component known as the ovarian cycle, which undergoes two main phases each month—the follicular phase and the luteal phase. The follicular phase is variable and averaging around 14 days. Ovulation, triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), marks the transition between the two phases. The second phase, the luteal phase, is relatively consistent, lasting approximately 14 days, and is marked by the activity of the corpus luteum. While a cycle length...

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Gynecology
  • Obstetrics

Background:

  • Bilateral simultaneous ectopic pregnancy is an exceptionally rare obstetric complication.
  • It can occur spontaneously or following assisted reproductive technology (ART).
  • Clinical presentation and management strategies require careful consideration due to rarity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and analyze reported cases of bilateral simultaneous ectopic pregnancy.
  • To propose a novel classification system for this condition.
  • To provide clinically useful data for managing this rare entity.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review and analysis of 42 bilateral ectopic pregnancy cases from the past decade.
  • Literature search for relevant case reports and studies.
  • Development of a new classification based on etiological factors and presentation.

Main Results:

  • Analysis of 42 cases identified distinct patterns in spontaneous vs. ART-conceived pregnancies.
  • A new classification system for bilateral ectopic pregnancies was proposed.
  • Data highlights the complexity and diagnostic challenges clinicians face.

Conclusions:

  • Bilateral simultaneous ectopic pregnancy necessitates a tailored diagnostic and management approach.
  • The proposed classification aims to standardize understanding and reporting.
  • Further research is warranted to optimize treatment strategies for this rare condition.
