Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Personality Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Self-defeating personality is theorized to have subtypes.
  • Self-handicapping is proposed as a self-protective mechanism within self-defeating personality subtypes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To correlate scores on Strube's self-handicapping scale with Schill's self-defeating personality scale.
  • To examine Berglas' proposition that self-handicapping relates to specific self-protective criteria of self-defeating personality.

Main Methods:

  • Correlational analysis was employed.
  • Strube's self-handicapping scale and Schill's self-defeating personality scale were administered.

Main Results:

  • Partial support for Berglas' proposition was found, particularly in men.

  • Correlations with other components of self-defeating personality indicated potential issues with the proposed self-protective criteria.
  • Conclusions:

    • The self-protective component criteria for self-defeating personality may require reconsideration.
    • Gender differences in the relationship between self-handicapping and self-defeating personality warrant further investigation.
