Summary

Domestic salt fluoridation (DSF) provides fluoride levels comparable to drinking water fluoridation (DWF). However, DSF may be insufficient in areas with naturally low fluoride in drinking water, though it remains safe.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Dental Health
  • Environmental Health

Background:

  • Fluoridation of domestic salt (DSF) and drinking water (DWF) are public health strategies to prevent tooth decay.
  • Assessing fluoride exposure and output is crucial for evaluating the effectiveness and safety of these methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare urinary fluoride output in students exposed to DWF versus DSF.
  • To evaluate plasma fluoride levels in students using DSF.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of DSF in different water fluoride contexts.

Main Methods:

  • Collection of spot urine samples from students aged 8-16 in regions with DWF and DSF.
  • Analysis of fluoride concentrations in urine and plasma samples.
  • Comparison of urinary fluoride levels across different fluoridation methods and regions.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Urinary fluoride concentrations were higher in students from Basel (DWF) and Davos (DSF) compared to Berne (DSF) and Winterthur (DSF).
  • Higher natural fluoride in Davos' drinking water contributed to elevated urinary fluoride.
  • Plasma fluoride levels in Winterthur students averaged 12.7 +/- 3.8 ng/ml.

Conclusions:

  • DSF generally achieves fluoride supply levels similar to DWF.
  • In areas with very low natural water fluoride, salt fluoridation alone may not reach optimal levels.
  • The study confirmed the safety of domestic salt fluoridation.
