Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination01:28

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...
Uterine Tubes01:16

Uterine Tubes

The uterine or fallopian tubes function as the conduit through which oocytes travel from the ovaries to the uterus. Each fallopian tube measures approximately 10 to 13 cm long and is anatomically divided into the infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus, and interstitial part (or intramural segment). The infundibulum is characterized by its funnel shape and features extensions called fimbriae which reach towards the peritoneal cavity. These fimbriae play a critical role during ovulation as they extend...
Histology of the Uterus01:19

Histology of the Uterus

The uterine wall consists of three histological layers: the perimetrium, myometrium, and endometrium. The outermost perimetrium is a thin, serous membrane connected with the broad ligament on the sides, which helps anchor the uterus in the pelvic cavity. The thickest layer, myometrium, is mainly made up of smooth muscle tissue bundles. Its contractions are vital in facilitating the expulsion of the uterine lining, fetus, and placenta during menstruation and childbirth.
The endometrium is the...
Uterus and Cervix01:18

Uterus and Cervix

The uterus, commonly called the womb, is a vital reproductive organ in females designed to provide a nurturing environment for the implantation and growth of an embryo. It is shaped like a hollow pear and positioned between the urinary bladder and the rectum. The uterus's structure allows it to support and protect a developing fetus throughout pregnancy.
The uterus is securely anchored within the pelvic cavity by paired broad ligaments on either side. It is further stabilized by three pairs of...
Appendicitis01:19

Appendicitis

Appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the vermiform appendix, most commonly caused by obstruction of its lumen. The appendix is a narrow, blind-ended pouch that extends from the cecum, making it particularly prone to obstruction. Causes include fecaliths, lymphoid hyperplasia (often after viral infections), parasites, tumors, or foreign bodies. This obstruction initiates a cascade of pathological changes.Luminal Obstruction and Early InflammationAfter obstruction, normal mucosal...

Summary

Endometriosis, a condition affecting women of childbearing age, can manifest in rare locations. This case highlights endometriosis presenting as a painful suburethral mass, causing voiding issues.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Urology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Endometriosis commonly affects pelvic organs in women of childbearing age.
  • Unusual extra-pelvic locations of endometriosis are infrequently reported.
  • Suburethral endometriosis is a rare presentation.

Observation:

  • A 32-year-old nulliparous woman presented with a painful suburethral mass.
  • Symptoms included obstructive voiding, dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, UTIs, dysuria, and dyspareunia.
  • Imaging revealed a suburethral cystic lesion, mimicking urethral diverticulum or endometrioma.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision confirmed the suburethral lesion as an endometriotic cyst.
  • This represents a rare case of suburethral endometriosis.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known anatomical spectrum of endometriosis.
  • Highlights the importance of considering endometriosis in the differential diagnosis of suburethral masses.
  • Emphasizes the need for thorough evaluation of pelvic pain and voiding dysfunction in women.
