Background:

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has provided public nursing home quality data since 2002.
Existing data displays, such as bar graphs on the CMS Nursing Home Compare website, are often misunderstood by users.
Improved comprehension of quality measures is crucial for informed healthcare choices.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of different visual reporting templates for nursing home quality measures.
To identify which display formats enhance user comprehension of complex healthcare performance data.

Main Methods:

Developed seven distinct reporting templates, including CMS-standard bar graphs and novel formats.
Conducted structured testing with 90 participants aged 45-75 to assess interpretation accuracy.
Utilized statistical significance testing to identify key findings regarding template performance.

Main Results:

Less than half of participants accurately interpreted the current bar graph displays from CMS Nursing Home Compare.
Templates incorporating simple performance descriptors (e.g., 'better,' 'average,' 'worse') resulted in the fewest interpretation errors.
Statistically significant differences in comprehension were observed across various template designs.

Conclusions:

Current bar graph visualizations on CMS Nursing Home Compare are not optimally understood by the public.
Visual display formats that use qualitative performance labels significantly improve the comprehension of nursing home quality measures.
Adopting user-friendly reporting formats can enhance public understanding and utilization of healthcare quality data.
