Primary stabbing headache (PSH) is a common headache disorder. Indomethacin effectively treated 74% of patients, though many PSH cases didn't meet diagnostic criteria.

Background:

  • Primary stabbing headache (PSH) is a recognized, short-lasting headache disorder.
  • Despite its recognition, PSH presents diagnostic challenges in clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize primary stabbing headache (PSH) patients in a Taiwanese headache clinic.
  • To evaluate diagnostic criterion adherence and treatment efficacy in PSH.

Main Methods:

  • A survey and registration of consecutive primary stabbing headache (PSH) patients.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, headache characteristics, comorbidities, and treatment response.

Main Results:

  • Eighty PSH patients (24 M/56 F, mean age 53.2 years) were studied.
  • Migraine comorbidity was lower in late-onset PSH (>50 years).
  • 70% of patients did not meet the trigeminal nerve distribution criterion, and 15% did not meet the no accompanying symptoms criterion.
  • Indomethacin showed 74% effectiveness in treated patients.

Conclusions:

  • Primary stabbing headache (PSH) is a prevalent and treatable disorder in headache clinics.
  • Current diagnostic criteria for PSH require revision to better encompass clinical presentations.
  • Indomethacin is an effective treatment option for primary stabbing headache (PSH).
