Depression: Overview01:18

Depression: Overview

Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...
Benefits of Self-Esteem01:25

Benefits of Self-Esteem

Self-esteem—an individual's overall evaluation of their worth—plays a complex role in psychological functioning and well-being. It is often associated with many positive traits, such as confidence, optimism, and perseverance. Individuals with high self-esteem typically experience better sleep, manage peer pressure more effectively, and report greater life satisfaction. Conversely, low self-esteem has been consistently linked with increased risks of depression, anxiety, and poor academic or...
Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification03:00

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Summary

The Adolescent Depression Awareness Program (ADAP) significantly improved high school students' knowledge about depression. This school-based curriculum tripled the number of students scoring 80% or higher on depression knowledge assessments.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Psychology
  • Medical Education

Background:

  • School-based suicide prevention programs are common interventions for adolescents.
  • Depression education in schools may reduce adolescent depression's morbidity, mortality, and stigma.
  • The Adolescent Depression Awareness Program (ADAP) created a 3-hour curriculum on depression for high schoolers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the ADAP curriculum in enhancing high school students' knowledge of depression.
  • To assess the impact of targeted depression education on adolescent mental health literacy.

Main Methods:

  • A pretest-posttest study design was employed.
  • 3,538 high school students completed a depression knowledge assessment before and after the ADAP curriculum.
  • Data were collected between 2001 and 2005.

Main Results:

  • The number of students scoring 80% or higher on the assessment significantly increased post-curriculum.
  • Student scores improved from 701 to 2,180, more than tripling the number of students with high knowledge.
  • The ADAP curriculum demonstrated a positive impact on depression knowledge acquisition.

Conclusions:

  • The ADAP curriculum is effective in improving adolescent knowledge about depression.
  • Further research is needed to confirm if enhanced knowledge leads to increased help-seeking behaviors.
  • Replication studies are recommended to validate these findings.
