This study computes surface tension for the Widom-Rowlinson binary mixture using direct simulations. Both canonical and fixed-normal-pressure ensembles yield consistent interfacial tension values, addressing system-size dependence.
Area of Science:
- Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
- Computational Physics
- Materials Science
Background:
- The Widom-Rowlinson (WR) model is a theoretical framework for studying fluid-fluid interfaces.
- Accurate computation of surface tension is crucial for understanding phase behavior and interfacial phenomena.
- Direct simulation methods offer a powerful tool for investigating inhomogeneous systems.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compute the surface tension of the fluid-fluid interface for the Widom-Rowlinson binary mixture.
- To compare simulation results obtained from different ensembles (canonical and fixed-normal-pressure).
- To investigate the system-size dependence of the computed surface tension.
Main Methods:
- Direct simulation of the inhomogeneous Widom-Rowlinson binary mixture.
- Utilizing the mechanical route for surface tension calculation via pressure tensor components.
- Employing both canonical and fixed-normal-pressure ensembles for simulations.
- Performing simulations in the semigrand canonical ensemble to study fluid-fluid coexistence properties.
Main Results:
- Consistent surface tension values were obtained from both canonical and fixed-normal-pressure ensemble simulations.
- The study addresses and analyzes the system-size dependence of the surface tension.
- Fluid-fluid coexistence properties were simulated and compared with existing data for the WR mixture.
- Results were examined in relation to the vapor-liquid equilibrium of the equivalent one-component penetrable sphere model.
Conclusions:
- Direct simulations provide reliable methods for calculating surface tension in binary mixtures.
- The choice of ensemble does not significantly impact the computed interfacial tension values.
- The findings contribute to a better understanding of phase behavior in the Widom-Rowlinson model and its relation to other physical models.

Surface Tension and Surface Energy
Consider a beaker filled with liquid. The bulk molecules in the liquid experience equal attractive forces on all sides with the surrounding molecules. However, the surface molecules experience a net attractive force downward due to the bulk molecules. The surface of the liquid behaves like a stretched membrane,...
Surface Tension, Capillary Action, and Viscosity
The various IMFs between identical molecules of a substance are examples of cohesive forces. The molecules within a liquid are surrounded by other molecules and are attracted equally in all directions by the cohesive forces within the liquid. However, the molecules on the surface of a liquid are attracted only by about one-half as many molecules. Because of the unbalanced molecular attractions on the surface molecules, liquids contract to form a shape that minimizes the number...
