Background:

  • Narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB) therapy has shown promise for generalized vitiligo treatment since 1997.
  • Limited data exists on the long-term duration and stability of repigmentation achieved with UVB therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the long-term stability of repigmentation in generalized vitiligo patients treated with narrowband UVB.
  • To evaluate the duration of treatment-induced pigment restoration for up to two years after therapy cessation.

Main Methods:

  • An initial open trial involved 31 generalized vitiligo patients receiving narrowband UVB thrice weekly for up to 12 months.
  • Responders (>75% repigmentation) entered a follow-up phase, monitored for two years post-treatment.
  • Pigmentation status and relapse occurrences were recorded every six months.

Main Results:

  • Eleven of 31 patients qualified for the follow-up trial.
  • Six patients experienced relapse, with four occurring within six months of treatment cessation.
  • Five patients maintained stable repigmentation at the 24-month follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Only 16% (five out of 31) of patients achieved stable repigmentation (>75%) two years after completing narrowband UVB therapy.
  • The findings highlight the potential for relapse even after successful initial treatment for generalized vitiligo.
  • Long-term monitoring is crucial to understand the durability of narrowband UVB treatment outcomes.
