Background:

  • The quantitative assessment of root substance loss during scaling and root planing (SRP) is crucial for understanding treatment outcomes.
  • Current knowledge regarding the precise amount of root substance removed by SRP is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively evaluate in vitro the root substance loss resulting from a defined number of working strokes at controlled forces during SRP.
  • To determine the relationship between applied force, number of strokes, and root substance removal.

Main Methods:

  • Extracted teeth with periodontitis were used for in vitro analysis.
  • A profilometer measured root surface levels before and after applying a set number of working strokes (up to 40) with controlled low and high forces.
  • Forces were measured using a piezoelectric receiver integrated into the curet.
