Summary

Histopathology in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and severe snoring shows similar pharyngeal tissue changes. Degenerative nerve changes in OSA may impair reflexes, contributing to airway instability.

Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) pathophysiology involves airway instability, but the underlying causes are unclear.
  • Potential factors include altered neurologic control, airway morphology, or both.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate histopathologic differences in pharyngeal tissues between severe OSA patients, severe snorers, and non-snorers.
  • To identify tissue features contributing to airway instability and OSA development.

  • Qualitative comparison of pharyngeal tissue sections (soft palate, uvula) using light and electron microscopy.
  • Analysis of samples from 4 severe apneics, 4 severe snorers, and 4 non-snorers.

Conclusions:

  • Similarities in pharyngeal tissue changes between OSA and severe snorers suggest a common etiology, possibly related to vibratory trauma.
