  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of mandibular distraction osteogenesis in pediatric patients.

  • Seventy-eight mandibular distractions were performed over a decade using internal microdistraction devices.
  • Distraction initiated after a 3-day latency period at a rate of 1 mm/day.

Main Results:

  • The procedure was successfully accomplished in all patients.
  • Complication rates included 2.6% wound infection, 2.6% bony nonunion, 3.8% premature consolidation, and 3.8% facial nerve complications.
  • Facial nerve paresis resolved within six months in affected patients.

Conclusions:

  • Mandibular distraction osteogenesis is a viable treatment option for the pediatric population.
  • As with any surgical intervention, potential perioperative complications should be considered.
