Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Carcinosarcoma is a rare biphasic malignant neoplasm.
  • It presents as a mixture of carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements.
  • These tumors commonly occur in organs such as the uterus, breast, thyroid, lung, and gastrointestinal tract.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the first known case of primary mediastinal carcinosarcoma.
  • To describe the clinicopathological features of this rare tumor presentation.

Main Methods:

  • Case report and literature review.
  • Histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry.

Main Results:

  • A primary mediastinal carcinosarcoma was identified.
  • The tumor exhibited both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components.

Conclusions:

  • Primary mediastinal carcinosarcoma is an extremely rare entity.
  • This case expands the known anatomical distribution of carcinosarcomas.
