Summary

Video-mediastinoscopy is a safe outpatient procedure for selected patients with mediastinal involvement. This study found no operative deaths and minimal complications in 20 procedures.

Background:

Mediastinal staging is crucial for lung cancer treatment planning.
Traditional mediastinoscopy is an inpatient procedure with associated costs and risks.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the safety and feasibility of video-mediastinoscopy as an outpatient procedure.
To assess outcomes and complications associated with same-day discharge after video-mediastinoscopy.

Main Methods:

A retrospective review of 20 outpatient video-mediastinoscopies performed between November 2002 and May 2003.
Data collection included operative outcomes, complications, and readmissions.

Main Results:

No operative deaths occurred during the study period.
One patient required readmission for pneumonia, treated successfully with antibiotics.
The procedure demonstrated a favorable safety profile in the outpatient setting.

Conclusions:

Video-mediastinoscopy can be safely performed on an outpatient basis for selected patients.
Outpatient video-mediastinoscopy offers a potentially cost-effective and efficient alternative for mediastinal assessment.
