Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Natural Products Chemistry

Background:

  • Solanum indicum L. is a plant with potential medicinal properties.
  • Previous phytochemical investigations of Solanum indicum L. have not identified several key compounds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize compounds from Solanum indicum L.
  • To evaluate the cytotoxic and antitumor activities of these compounds.

Main Methods:

  • Compounds were isolated using standard phytochemical techniques.
  • Cytotoxicity was assessed using DEA and MTT assays on seven cancer cell lines.
  • In vivo antitumor activity was evaluated in C6 glioma cells.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Six compounds were isolated: beta-Sitosterol, beta-sitosterol glucoside, dioscin (SI-2), methyl protoprosapogenin A of dioscin (SI-3), methyl protodioscin (SI-4), and protodioscin (SI-5).
  • Dioscin (SI-2) and methyl protodioscin (SI-4) exhibited potent cytotoxicity.
  • SI-2, SI-3, SI-4, and SI-5 showed cytotoxicity against C6 glioma cells, with SI-3, SI-4, and SI-5 demonstrating in vivo tumor inhibition.
  • SI-2 inhibited DNA synthesis in C6 glioma cells.
  • Conclusions:

    • Solanum indicum L. is a source of bioactive compounds with potential anticancer properties.
    • Dioscin and its derivatives show promise as cytotoxic agents and antitumor therapeutics, particularly against glioma.
