Individualized oral nutritional support after total gastrectomy did not significantly alter body weight or metabolism long-term. However, patients who remained healthy with a BMI under 25 showed positive weight changes, indicating co-morbidity impacts effectiveness.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Nutritional Science
- Surgical Oncology
Background:
- Long-term nutritional status after total gastrectomy remains poorly understood.
- The efficacy of individualized nutritional support requires further investigation.
- Current dietary counseling is often poorly defined.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the long-term effects of individualized oral nutritional support following total gastrectomy.
- To assess the impact of nutritional intervention on nutritional status and energy metabolism.
Main Methods:
- Individualized dietary advice focused on energy and protein-rich foods and supplements.
- Monthly counseling sessions were provided.
- Key metrics including body weight, food intake, body composition, and energy expenditure were monitored over 12 months.
Main Results:
- No significant changes in body weight, body composition, or energy metabolism were observed at 12 months post-intervention.
- Weight changes were heterogeneous among patients.
- Patients who remained healthy with a BMI < 25 experienced weight gain (p<0.05), unlike those with co-morbidities or higher initial BMI.
Conclusions:
- Oral nutritional intervention did not significantly alter long-term outcomes in patients post-total gastrectomy.
- Intercurrent co-morbidity significantly influences the effectiveness of nutritional support.
- Nutritional support demonstrated greater efficacy in healthy patients with a BMI < 25.
