Techniques of therapeutic communication I: Active Listening, Sharing Observations, Validation, and Using Touch

The history of therapeutic communication can be traced back to Florence Nightingale, who emphasized the importance of developing trusting relationships with patients. She taught that the presence of nurses with patients results in therapeutic healing.
Therapeutic communication is not the same as social interaction. Social interaction has no goal or purpose and consists of casual information sharing, whereas therapeutic communication has a plan or purpose for the conversation. Therapeutic...
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques V

A social support system is a structured network of personal relationships that provides assistance to individuals facing various challenges, offering a buffer against psychological and physical stressors. This network may consist of family members, friends, neighbors, colleagues, or other community members who provide resources and companionship. Social support can take many forms, including advice, emotional comfort, practical help, and companionship. Research indicates that these networks can...
Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.
Coping Strategies: Problem Focused01:27

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Negative and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Negative symptoms of schizophrenia indicate a reduction or absence of typical behaviors and emotional responses found in healthy individuals, while positive symptoms reflect an excess or distortion of normal functioning.
Negative Symptoms

Summary

Supportive interventions help patients with weak symbolic systems by improving nonsymbolic functioning and reestablishing symbolic mental processes. These psychoanalytic techniques address in-session experiences, fostering symbolization and aiding mental elaboration.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychoanalysis

Background:

  • Patients with feeble symbolic systems struggle with nonsymbolic mental functioning.
  • Symbolic and nonsymbolic modes of mental functioning are distinct but interconnected.
  • Understanding these modes is crucial for effective therapeutic interventions.

Observation:

  • Supportive interventions are key therapeutic tools for analysts.
  • These interventions focus on improving a patient's nonsymbolic functioning.
  • Pragmatic and interactive communication addresses nonsymbolic in-session experiences.

Findings:

  • Supportive interventions, particularly when transference-focused, foster symbolization of primitive transference layers.
  • Mechanisms include modification of mental procedures and gratification of ego/self-needs.
  • This leads to temporary relief from psychic pain, increased affect tolerance, and renewed symbolic capacity.

Implications:

  • Supportive interventions can reestablish symbolic mental functioning in vulnerable patients.
  • They offer a potential solution to a gap in Bion's model of reverie.
  • Enhanced symbolic functioning can improve overall mental health and therapeutic outcomes.
