Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Symptomatic extraprostatic ejaculatory duct cysts (EDCs) can cause discomfort and reproductive issues.
  • Traditional surgical approaches may involve significant morbidity.

Observation:

  • Three cases of laparoscopic EDC excision were reviewed.
  • Data collected included operative details, recovery, sexual function, and follow-up outcomes.

Findings:

  • Laparoscopic EDC excision was successful in all patients.
  • Mean operation time was 105 minutes with 65 ml blood loss.
  • Patients experienced short hospital stays (3.0 days) and rapid recovery.
  • Normal erectile and ejaculatory function was maintained, with improved semen quality in two patients.
  • No symptom recurrence was noted during a mean 32-month follow-up.

Implications:

  • Laparoscopic surgery is a feasible and effective option for symptomatic EDCs.
  • Its minimally invasive nature leads to shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.
  • This approach is particularly beneficial for large or calculus-containing cysts.
