Context:

Violence and mistreatment against the aged are significant societal issues.
Official documentation from an institution in Fortaleza-CE, Brazil, was analyzed.
A retrospective documentary study design was employed.

Purpose:

To analyze data on violence and mistreatment against the elderly.
To identify patterns in elder abuse, including types of mistreatment and perpetrators.
To underscore the importance of targeted services and public policies for elder protection.

Summary:

Out of 424 documents, 284 (67%) indicated abandonment of the elderly.
Children were identified as aggressors in 207 (49%) of cases.
Types of mistreatment included neglect (38%), financial exploitation (27%), verbal aggression (19%), and physical abuse (16%).

Impact:

Findings emphasize the critical need for specialized services addressing elder abuse.
The study calls for public policies that recognize the social role of the elderly.
Prioritizing care and protection for the elderly within families and institutions is essential.
