Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the diagnostic value of CE in pediatric small intestine diseases.
  • To determine the safety, tolerance, and applicability of CE in children.
  • To assess CE's role in diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, and malabsorption.

Main Methods:

  • 87 pediatric patients with suspected small-bowel disease underwent CE using the M2A capsule.
  • Indications included inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, and malabsorption.
  • Patient age ranged from 18 months to 18 years.

Main Results:

  • CE detected pathological findings in 71% of patients.
  • Small-bowel polyps were confirmed in 21/28 patients with known polyposis and all 5 suspected cases.
  • CE identified small intestine lesions in 16/22 patients with known inflammatory bowel disease.

Conclusions:

  • CE is a highly useful system for diagnosing suspected small-bowel diseases in pediatric patients.
  • The high positive examination rate is attributed to careful patient selection for safety.
  • This study represents the largest pediatric cohort, including the youngest child reported, confirming CE's value.
