Criteria for placement decisions with cocaine-exposed infants

This study explored the criteria for placement decisions concerning cocaine-exposed infants used by child protection workers in three suburban Chicago counties. Content analyses uncovered a complex decision-making process that demonstrated consistency across geographic regions. A number of primary factors influence decisions for in-home or out-of-home care for the infant, with the availability of support systems for the parents and infants a critical factor in deciding placement.
