A rare case of small bowel obstruction caused by an ingested apricot was successfully treated with laparoscopic-assisted surgery. This minimally invasive approach avoided a traditional laparotomy for this food bolus obstruction.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Innovation
Background:
- Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common surgical emergency.
- Ingested fruit causing SBO is rare, typically managed with laparotomy.
- Laparoscopic surgery offers an alternative for impacted foreign bodies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a case of SBO due to an ingested apricot.
- To highlight the efficacy of laparoscopic-assisted surgery in managing such cases.
- To emphasize the benefits of minimally invasive approaches in SBO.
Main Methods:
- A 75-year-old female presented with symptoms of acute SBO.
- Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed a distal jejunal obstruction.
- A dried apricot foreign body was extracted via mini-laparotomy.
Main Results:
- Successful extraction of the apricot foreign body.
- Resolution of the small bowel obstruction.
- Avoidance of a formal laparotomy.
Conclusions:
- Food bolus obstruction is a potential cause of SBO.
- Laparoscopic techniques are effective for diagnosing and managing SBO.
- Minimally invasive surgery offers advantages over laparotomy for SBO management.

Amnesia
The severity and duration of memory loss vary depending on the type and underlying cause. Amnesia is classified into two main types: retrograde and anterograde.
Retrograde amnesia is marked by the loss of memories formed before the onset of the condition. Patients may recall distant past events but often forget those occurring shortly before the incident.
Anterograde...
