  • Previous studies showed poor learning and confusions among nonmedical participants.
  • The impact of expertise, concurrent tasks, and alarm overlap on nurses was unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate nurses' accuracy and speed in identifying melodic medical equipment alarms.
  • To assess alarm identification under conditions of no mnemonics, alarm overlap, and concurrent tasks.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen nurses learned melodic alarms without mnemonics over two sessions.
  • Nurses identified single or paired alarms in sequential, partially overlapping, or nearly completely overlapping configurations.
  • A concurrent mental arithmetic task was performed during half of the experimental blocks.

Main Results:

  • Nurses' learning of alarms was poor, comparable to nonnurses.
  • Previously noted confusions between alarms persisted.
  • Overlapping alarms were extremely difficult to identify; concurrent tasks impacted response time but not accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • Melodic alarms fail discrimination when overlapping due to poor auditory stream segregation.
  • Strict adherence to alarm sequencing directives or redesigning alarms for better auditory streaming is necessary.
